The knobs that get turned to print
Most knobs come down to a handful of jobs. Control and pointer knobs sit on a potentiometer, switch, or encoder shaft and show where the setting is. Clamping and fixture knobs carry a threaded stud or a tapped insert so an operator can lock a jig or a guard by hand. Star, lobe, and wing knobs give fingers something to grab under torque. Knurled adjustment knobs and thumb wheels handle fine settings, and hand wheels and crank knobs drive a leadscrew or a valve. Instrument and equipment knobs round it out wherever a panel needs a grip that matches.
What they share is that the catalog version is close but never exact: the thread is metric when you need imperial, the bore does not match your shaft, the knurl is wrong, or the look does not suit the rest of the build. Those get turned from bar to the right diameter and profile, then milled for flats, lobes, or a pointer where the grip calls for it. One replacement knob for a machine, or a matched set for a panel, both quote the same way.
Grip: knurl, flats, lobes, and pointers
The grip is the whole point of a knob, so it is worth calling out clearly. A diamond or straight knurl rolled into the rim gives a sure hand-hold and is the most common finish on an adjustment knob. Milled flats or scalloped lobes suit a knob that takes real torque, like a clamp or a valve. Star and wing shapes give the most leverage for hand-tightening. Name the knurl pattern and pitch, or the lobe count and profile, so the grip comes out the way you picture it.
A pointer or an index flat turns a knob into a control you can read: a raised arrow, a skirt with a flat for a set mark, or a D-shaped profile that lines up with a scale. If the knob shows a position, say where the pointer sits relative to the bore or the flat and it gets cut to match. Cosmetic edges get a chamfer or radius so nothing is sharp in the hand.
Threads, bores, and how it mounts
How the knob mounts is the other half of the print. A tapped female thread (through or blind) screws onto a stud or a leadscrew; a male stud turned onto the back bolts the knob into a jig; a plain bore with a set-screw flat clamps onto a shaft; and a D-bore or a flatted bore drops onto a potentiometer or encoder shaft without slipping. Give the thread size, pitch, and class (for example 1/4-20 UNC 2B or M6x1.0), or the shaft diameter and the fit you want, and note whether a tapped hole is through or blind with its usable depth.
Threaded studs and inserts put knobs next to custom fasteners, and they get made the same way. On a plastic knob, a brass threaded insert can be specified so the thread wears like metal while the body stays light and warm in the hand. For a set-screw knob, say whether you want a flat on the shaft for the screw to seat against or a cup point biting bare metal, and leave enough wall around the bore so the set screw grips without splitting it.
Materials and finishes
6061 aluminum is the default: light, easy to turn, and happy to anodize, which lets a knob be keyed by color so a row of identical knobs reads red, blue, and black on a panel instead of getting mixed up. Brass turns and polishes beautifully and is the pick for a decorative or instrument knob that should look finished. Stainless handles washdown, marine, and medical duty, steel suits a heavy hand wheel, and Delrin or acetal insulates, will not mar what it touches, and stays cooler to the grip near a hot machine.
Finishes follow the look you want. Anodize in clear, black, or color adds wear resistance and the option to color-key, and a knurl can be left bright against an anodized body for contrast. Bead blast evens out the surface before anodize, brushed and polished suit a show face, stainless ships passivated, and Delrin runs as-machined. Every knob is inspected against the print before it ships, so the thread, bore, and grip you called out are checked, not assumed.
