CNC turning is how round parts get made: bar stock spins in a lathe while a tool cuts the profile, so anything cylindrical or symmetric is a candidate. The everyday list is shafts and pins, bushings and sleeves, standoffs and spacers, threaded studs and adapters, fittings, weld-in bungs, and shaft couplers, plus knurled grips, tapered noses, grooves, and other features that come off the lathe in one setup.

Most turned parts pick up a few milled features too: a flat, a cross-hole, a wrench hex. Those get added on a mill-turn or in a second operation and quoted as one part, so you send one model and get one number back. Send the STEP file and a drawing and the team will tell you the cleanest way to make it.

Materials for CNC turned parts

Turning runs across aluminum, steel, stainless, titanium, brass, copper, and engineering plastics like Delrin and PEEK. 6061 aluminum is the default for light, general-purpose parts; 7075 when the part carries load. Brass and 303 stainless turn cleanly and are common for fittings and bushings, and titanium covers the parts that need strength without weight.

If a part needs a specific alloy, temper, or certification, say so when you send the files and it gets sourced to spec. Material is the first thing that moves a turned-part price, so naming it up front gets you a tighter quote faster.

Tolerances, threads, and inspection

Critical diameters typically hold around ±0.001 in, with tighter fits held on request. Call the close dimensions out on your drawing so they get quoted and inspected to that number rather than guessed. Threads are routine too: standard, fine, and non-standard pitches, odd lengths, and one-off specials that distributors won’t run in small quantities.

Every turned part is inspected against your print before it ships, and the dimensions that matter get checked against the callouts you marked. Inspection is the part of the job the team actually owns, so it’s not an upsell, it’s how the work leaves.

From one piece to production runs

There’s no minimum order: a single replacement bushing is quoted the same way as a run of a few thousand pins. For small, high-precision, higher-volume turned work, small-diameter parts in the thousands, Swiss screw machining is usually the better fit, and a quote will say so if your part lands there.

01 What files do you need to quote a turned part?

A STEP or STP model plus a PDF drawing is best, especially for threads, fits, and critical diameters, which belong on the drawing. STL and SLDPRT files also work, and a ZIP is fine for multi-part jobs.

02 What CNC turned parts can you make?

Shafts, pins, bushings, sleeves, standoffs, spacers, threaded studs and adapters, fittings, and weld-in bungs: basically any round or symmetric part that starts as bar stock, including ones with milled flats, cross-holes, or knurls added.

03 What tolerance can be held on turned diameters?

Around ±0.001 in on critical diameters is typical, with tighter fits held on request. Mark the critical dimensions on your drawing and the part will be inspected to them before it ships.

04 Can you make custom threaded parts?
