Swiss screw machining (also called Swiss turning) makes small-diameter, high-precision turned parts in volume: think pins, contacts, shafts, and fittings under about an inch across. What Swiss machining does that a standard lathe can’t

A Swiss-type lathe feeds the bar stock through a guide bushing that supports the material right next to the cutting tool. Because the part is held a fraction of an inch from where it’s being cut, it barely deflects, so long, slender, small-diameter parts come out straight and to size instead of flexing away from the tool.

That’s why Swiss machining owns the small-and-precise corner of CNC turning: pins, dowels, contacts, micro-shafts, threaded studs, nozzles, and fittings where the diameter is small, the tolerance is tight, and you need a lot of them all identical.

It runs across the usual turning materials: brass and free-machining 303 stainless are screw-machine staples, with aluminum, titanium, steel, and engineering plastics all on the table. The parts tend to land in connectors and electronics, medical and dental components, fluid fittings, and instrumentation, anywhere a small precision part ships in real quantities.

Tolerances, features, and finishes

Swiss work routinely holds diameters in the ±0.0002-0.0005 in range with fine surface finishes straight off the machine. Most of these lathes are turn-mill, so cross-holes, flats, slots, knurls, and threads get cut in the same cycle, and the part comes off complete instead of moving to a second operation.

Mark the critical diameters, the thread spec, and any finish callouts on your drawing. Those are the dimensions that get quoted and inspected to number, and on small precision parts they’re what the price turns on.

When Swiss is the right call, and when it isn’t

Swiss earns its setup on small-diameter parts in higher quantities: hundreds to many thousands of identical pieces where the per-part time is short and consistency matters. For larger-diameter work, one-offs, or short runs, conventional turning is usually faster and cheaper, and a quote will steer you there if that’s the better fit.

Quoting a Swiss job

Send a STEP model plus a PDF drawing through the quote form, with material, quantity, and any date you’re working against. Asking for two or three quantities (say 500, 1,000, and 5,000) puts the whole price curve in one quote so you can see where the part gets efficient. Many Swiss parts are turned studs, standoffs, and contacts that overlap with custom fasteners, just smaller and in bigger batches.

A Swiss-type lathe supports the bar stock in a guide bushing right at the cutting tool, so small-diameter and slender parts don’t deflect. Regular turning grips the stock in a chuck farther from the cut, which is fine for larger or shorter parts but not as steady on tiny, long ones.
